The Game Award for Game of the Year 2023-All Games list & Winners

The Game Award for Game of the Year 2023 was won by Baldur’s Gate 3. This award is given to a video game that represents the pinnacle of gaming for the year. The Game Awards winners are determined by a “blended vote” that accounts for jury votes and fan votes. The jury votes account for 90% of the voting weight while the fan votes make up the remaining 10%.

Baldur’s Gate 3 also won the awards for Best Multiplayer and Best Narrative. The Game Awards 2023 was streamed live on December 7, 2023. It’s interesting to note that different games won the Game of the Year award at different events. For instance, Elden Ring won the Game of the Year at the New York Game Awards 2023, and Vampire Survivors won the Best Game prize at the BAFTA Games Awards.

Who were the other nominees for Game of the Year?

The other nominees for the Game of the Year 2023 were:

  • The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, a sequel to the acclaimed Breath of the Wild.
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, a superhero action-adventure game featuring Spider-Man and Venom.
  • Alan Wake 2, a psychological thriller game about a writer haunted by his creations.
  • Resident Evil 4, a remake of the classic survival horror game.
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a new 2D platformer game starring Mario and Luigi.

These games were recognized for their exceptional creativity and innovation in game direction and design.

What is the criteria for winning Game of the Year?

The Game of the Year award is given to a video game that is judged to deliver the best experience across creative and technical fields. The criteria on which a game is evaluated are:

– Game concept: This includes the originality of the idea, the playability of the game, and the overall game value¹.

– Rule structure: This involves the composition of the game’s rules, their clarity, and comprehensibility.

The process begins with over 100 video game publications and websites, which collectively name six games as nominees. Each outlet completes an unranked ballot listing its top five choices; games with the most appearances across the ballots are selected as the nominees. The winners are determined by a combined vote between the jury 90 % and public voting 10 %. Any game released before a certain date in November prior to the ceremony is eligible for award consideration.
